Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, whisk together sugar, cornstarch, and salt.

  2. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth.

  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened (about 8 minutes).

  4. In a bowl, whisk egg yolks. Gradually whisk in 1/2 cup of hot milk mixture.

  5. Return egg mixture to saucepan and cook 2 minutes more.

  6. Remove from heat and stir in chocolate, butter, and vanilla until smooth.

  7. Pour into baked pie crust and press plastic wrap directly onto surface.

  8. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours.

  9. Whip cream with powdered sugar until stiff peaks form.

  10. Top pie with whipped cream and chocolate shavings before serving.
